Marcus Hanel – Catching

(For more information or to set up a lesson, click here)

Marcus Hanel served as a bullpen catcher and catching instructor for the Milwaukee Brewers from 2000 until stepping down after the 2020 season. During his two decades with the organization, he became a respected and steady presence on the staff, known for his leadership, reliability, and passion for the game.

Before joining the Brewers, Hanel spent 11 years in professional baseball, playing in the minor league systems of the Pittsburgh Pirates (1989–1997), Atlanta Braves (1998), and Arizona Diamondbacks (1999). He was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 18th round of the 1989 MLB Draft and signed by scout Bill Bryk.

A Racine, Wisconsin native, Hanel graduated from William Horlick High School in 1989. Known for his humor and larger-than-life personality, he once set the Citizens Bank Park record for most cheesesteaks eaten during a four-game series — an impressive 23.

Hanel has also remained active in baseball instruction, serving as an instructor at Hitters Baseball Academy since 1999 during the Milwaukee Brewers offseason. He has served as a coach since 2021.

Off the field, Hanel has made a lasting impact in his community. In 2005, he founded Koos for Kids, a charitable organization whose mission is “to enhance the quality of life for terminally ill or disadvantaged children in Southeastern Wisconsin.”

Hanel is married to his wife, Jill, and together they have four children — Grace, Ashley, Nathan, and Levi.
